Swimming/Drowning II]
Today’s final swim lesson was "fun day," where the kids get to go on the slides.
Oliver, yelling to his teacher from the top of the short yellow slide: I can do it myself. You don’t have to catch me!!!
Teacher: Okay, go!
Oliver barrels down the slide, lands in the water on his feet successfully. Then loses his footing and disappears entirely under the water, for a long time.
Oliver: (resurfacing): Oh my!!! Oh dear!!! That was NOT a good idea. NOT. I think you need to catch me from now on.
Teacher: You did a good job! You did it by yourself!
Oliver: I need to make a statement. THAT was the problem. I went under the water and it went in my EYES and I almost drank the WHOLE pool. THAT is why it is not a good idea. It does not WORK!
The kids then climb up to the top of the long curvy green slide. The teacher is standing way at the bottom.
Oliver (screaming, loud enough to be heard in the next county): Are you going to CATCH ME???
Teacher: Yes, Oliver. Come on!
Oliver: I SAID are you going to catch me???
Teacher: Yes!!
Oliver: Are you sure?
Other children, standing in line, annoyed: GO OLIVER!!
Oliver (turning to the mass of children): Do you want me to DROWN???
One child: Yes.
Another child: Just go.
A third child (trying to be helpful, shouting to the teacher): Are you going to catch him????
Oliver finally goes. At the end of fun day, I tell him to thank his teacher for the swimming lesson.
Oliver: Thank you. Thank you for not letting me break Rule No. 2, which is NO DROWNING. I'm alive! That is SO GOOD!
